Sustainable architecture is considered one of the most critical research areas within the theory of sustainable development. It is expected that the overall educational content of architecture aligns with the principles of sustainable development. Therefore, this research aims to review the content of sustainability courses to ensure they meet the nation's needs and to update the educational program in line with international standards. This is a development-oriented research with a qualitative approach. The primary research question is: "How can sustainability courses be taught to assist an architect during the design process?" To answer this question, a comparative-interpretive method was employed, based on a comparative analysis of sustainability topics and courses in the undergraduate architecture program in Iran from 1991 to 2023, as well as a comparative study between domestic and foreign undergraduate architecture programs. Library research was utilized to obtain the necessary data. The research findings indicate that a fragmented approach to sustainability courses, as demonstrated by offering standalone courses, a lengthy undergraduate study duration with a limited number of sustainability-related courses, insufficient course hours dedicated to sustainability, the absence of climate-related classes from the beginning of the program, a lack of integration between workshop courses and theoretical subjects, and a greater reliance on written exams rather than classroom participation and projects in final assessments are among the weaknesses of the undergraduate architecture curriculum in Iran regarding sustainability education. Finally, the study proposes recommendations at both the faculty and policymaker levels, based on the strengths of foreign architecture programs, to improve sustainability education within Iran's architecture curriculum.
